Firefighters responded to a house fire in Alsace Avenue, Hoppers Crossing, on Thursday evening.
Crews arrived on scene around 6.15pm, within minutes of receiving the call, to find the single storey home well involved in fire.
Firefighters forced entry into the house to find the rear of the home roof fully involved in fire.
Searches by firefighters determined that the family of three was not home.
The home was significantly damaged by the fire.
The fire was deemed under control within 50 minutes.
The cause of the fire will be investigated by specialist FRV fire investigators The family has sourced alternative accommodation.
