At 4.21am, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to multiple calls of a house on fire on Braemar Street, Essendon.
Crews arrived on scene to find a double-storey house well alight.
Firefighters donned breathing apparatus and began attacking the front and rear of the fire to prevent any spread to adjoining properties.
Firefighters were hampered by a live power line arcing and sparking on the front lawn, so the power company was urgently requested to attend.
No occupants were home at the time of the fire.
The fire was deemed under control at 4.51am.
Firefighters will remain on scene to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
The incident will be investigated by FRV specialists and Victoria Police, who were also on scene.
