At 10.25pm, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) was called to an incident on Nicholson Street, Footscray after a caller to Triple Zero (000) reported smoke was issuing from a shop.
Firefighters arrived within five minutes to find multiple stores alight in a double-storey retail shopping strip.
FRV crews donned breathing apparatus to attack the fire.
Firefighters conducted a search and were able to safely evacuate an occupant from the second floor.
The fire caused major damage in one shop and spread through the eaves to impact three other stores.
The scene was deemed Under Control at 11.47pm.
The fire will be investigated by FRV fire investigators.
