A Melbourne family has safely evacuated after being alerted to a fire by a working smoke alarm.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) was called to Kionga Street, Clayton around 3 o'clock this afternoon after several callers to Triple Zero (000) reported black smoke billowing from a home.

Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes to find the upper level of a double-storey brick house well involved in fire.

Thankfully, six occupants and their pets safely evacuated the property prior to the arrival of firefighters after being alerted to the blaze by a working smoke alarm.

The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes, however the blaze caused extensive damage to the upper floor with the remainder of the property suffering significant smoke and water damage.

Fire investigators are working to determine the cause and will remain on scene until investigations are complete.

Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police were also on scene.
