The draft guideline outlines FRV’s position on key fire safety design considerations relevant to the planning, design, construction and operation of data centres within the FRV Fire District. It has been developed to support consistent fire safety outcomes while reflecting contemporary industry practices and regulatory expectations.

Drawing on FRV’s experience reviewing data centre developments, the guideline incorporates lessons learned from past projects, common industry approaches and insights shared by fire authorities in other jurisdictions.

FRV recognises the critical role data centres play in supporting Victoria’s digital economy and is committed to working collaboratively with industry to ensure the guideline is practical, effective and fit for purpose.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Jamie Hansen said the consultation process is an important opportunity for industry stakeholders to help shape the final guideline.

“As data centre development continues to grow, it is important that fire safety guidance keeps pace with evolving technologies and industry practices,” ACFO Hansen said.

“We encourage designers, developers, operators and other stakeholders to review the draft guideline and provide feedback to help ensure it delivers practical and effective fire safety outcomes.”

FRV is seeking feedback on:

  • The clarity and usability of the guideline;
  • The practicality of its proposed approach and recommendations;
  • Potential impacts on industry operations and compliance activities; and
  • Areas where additional guidance or clarification may be beneficial.

Industry feedback will assist FRV in refining the guideline and ensuring it effectively supports both industry and regulatory objectives.

Stakeholders are invited to review the consultation draft and submit written feedback by close of business on 28 August 2026.
