Bedroom fire in Newport under control

Firefighters responded to a house fire on Maddox Road in Newport at around 8pm on Monday evening following several calls to triple zero (000).

Responding firefighters observed substantial smoke issuing while en route, and requested additional support.

Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes and were met with a fire that had spread from the front bedroom of a single storey home, into the roof space.

Crews worked to bring the fire under control within half an hour, and remained on scene checking for fire extension and to ensure it was completely extinguished.

Two occupants evacuated the home and were transferred into the care of Ambulance Victoria paramedics.

At the height of the fire there were seven firefighting appliances on scene.

The scene will be handed to Victoria Police for further investigation.
