More than 25 firefighters have gained the upper hand of a fire which ripped through a Cheltenham Park this afternoon.

Crews were called to the reserve in Park Road just after 1pm following calls to Triple Zero (000).

Firefighters arrived on scene within four minutes to find a large grass and scrub fire measuring two hectares being fanned by the wind.

Working side by side and using strike teams, FRV and CFA firefighters were able to get the fire under control by 2.15pm and prevent it from spreading, protecting parkland and indigenous assets.

Crews will remain on scene to ensure it is fully extinguished.
