Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) crews responded to a fire at a kebab shop in Mordialloc shortly after 6pm on Sunday evening, following multiple calls to Triple Zero (000) reporting a fire.
Firefighters arrived to find the shop well alight with people trying to extinguish the fire with a garden hose.
FRV crews in breathing apparatus entered the burning building and performed an aggressive internal attack on the fire.
An aerial firefighting appliance was used to protect neighbouring buildings in the industrial area that were under threat from the blaze.
Three persons were able to evacuate the building safely without injury.
The fire was declared under control at 08:56pm, two and a half hours after FRV arrived on scene.
The takeaway food premises has sustained significant damage in the fire.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined but will be investigated by the FRV Fire Investigation Unit.
FRV remains on scene to monitor for hot spots.
