Approximately 75 firefighters responded to a grass fire in Mount Cottrell just after 4:40 am after receiving a call to Triple Zero (000).
Firefighters arrived at the Faulkners Road scene to find a 50-acre grassfire which was burning in a southerly direction and immediately escalated the response.
Wearing breathing apparatus, crews from FRV and CFA attacked the blaze with the incident under control at 5:55 am.
Crews conducted a search of the area to confirm that the fire was extinguished before handing the scene over to the manager of the site.
