Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to an incident in Erskine Way, Melton West at 11.03pm yesterday after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported smoke issuing from a house.

FRV crews arrived on scene within six minutes to find the house well alight with flames through the roof of the single storey 15m x 20m home. The occupant had evacuated safely with no report of injuries.

Crews, assisted by CFA, escalated the response and the fire was deemed under control at 11.25pm.

The home was severely damaged with some structural collapse of the roof although firefighters prevented the blaze spreading to neighbouring homes.

FRV crews remained on scene overnight to monitor hot spots.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but is believed to be electrical.

A total of eight appliances and 22 firefighters attended the scene while Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria were on scene assisting FRV operations.

The council was notified and a building inspector requested to attend in the morning.
