Firefighters have responded to an incident in Preston following multiple Triple Zero (000) calls just after 3:00am on Saturday morning reporting a building fire.

Crews arrived on scene within 4 minutes to find a single storey vacant building containing a number of vacant shops engulfed in flames.

Approximately 60 firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and to evacuate residents from an adjacent apartment building due to the threat posed by the fire.

Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters attacked the blaze with the incident declared under control at 5:43am.

Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria were also on scene assisting with operations.

At this stage, we anticipate that High Street will be closed for some time as crews remain on scene throughout the day to ensure the fire is completely extinguished and the scene remains safe.
