Approximately 30 firefighters responded to a house fire in Mentone on Friday morning.

FRV crews were called to the Station Street incident just before 8:40am, after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported a fire in a vacant house.

Firefighters arrived on scene in three minutes to find the house well alight and flames coming from the roof.

Wearing breathing apparatus, they established hose lines and worked quickly to knock the fire down, and brought it under control within 30 minutes.

A search of the house confirmed there was no one inside, and firefighters remained on scene to monitor hot spots.

Firefighters determined the cause to be suspicious and handed the scene over to Victoria Police.
