Firefighters worked to bring a fire at a recycling facility in Tottenham under control on Friday night.

Multiple callers to Triple Zero (000) reported black smoke coming from the rear of the Somerville Road facility just before 11:00pm.

Crews arrived within five minutes to find a pile of rubbish fully alight.

Using specialist aerial appliances, firefighters attacked the fire and brought it under control in one hour.

Crews remained on scene overnight to monitor the pile, and will use heavy machinery to pull it apart to confirm all hotspots have been extinguished.

Specialist FRV fire investigators will attend the scene this morning to determine a cause.

The site was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported.

A community advice message was issued to residents in Brooklyn, Tottenham, West Footscray and Yarraville for visible smoke.
