Approximately 30 firefighters responded to a building fire in Newport early on Tuesday morning.

On duty PSOs at a train station in Mason Street reported smoke and flames coming from the vacant building just before 12:20am.

FRV crews arrived on scene in two minutes and escalated the response.

Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters worked to protect neighbouring properties and to gain access to the second floor of the building to quickly extinguish the fire.

FRV worked alongside Victoria Police at the scene and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
