Firefighters have extinguished a fire which erupted at a South Morang aged care facility this evening.

Crews were called to the centre on Plenty Road after a fire indicator panel was set off, alerting the brigade to a possible blaze just after 5.30pm.

Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes and were confronted by thick black smoke coming from the north wing of the site.

Crews worked quickly with staff to ensure residents were moved to a safe area while the fire was tackled.

They managed to extinguish the blaze by about 6.15pm.

It’s believed the fire was sparked in a compressor in the ceiling space of a store room.

No residents were injured during the incident and all have been able to return to their rooms as the scene is now safe.
