Firefighters attack Somerton factory blaze

FRV firefighters responded to a factory fire in Somerton following a call to Triple Zero (000) at about 10.30pm on Thursday night.

Crews arrived on scene within five minutes to find significant smoke and flames issuing from a waste recycling facility, and quickly escalated the response.

More than 50 FRV and CFA firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, as well as specialist aerial appliances, all worked to attack the blaze and prevent further spread.

The fire was declared under control at about 4.10am, with the Hume Highway closed in both directions at the scene of the fire.

Crews remain on scene to ensure all hot spots are extinguished and to make the scene safe.

Victoria Police were called to assist with traffic control. The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and Ambulance Victoria also attended the incident.

The cause of the fire is not yet determined, however it is not believed to have started under suspicious circumstances.
