At 2.04am, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to an incident on Malvern Road, Prahran after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported a structure fire.
Firefighters arrived on scene within four minutes to find the first floor of a two storey 15x30m brick building fully involved with fire.
Aerial appliances were used to assist in firefighting operations. All firefighting operations were external due to difficulty gaining access to fire.
Tram lines were isolated on Malvern Road.
A community warning for smoke in area was issued at 2.58am.
The structure fire was deemed under control at 4.25am.
FRV will remain on scene to monitor hot spots. Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria were on scene to assist FRV in operations.
The cause of fire is yet to be determined and will be investigated by Victoria Police.
A Stonington Council Building Surveyor was requested to attend in daylight hours to assess the structural integrity of building. Power and Gas companies were also requested for isolations.
