Firefighters battling South Yarra church fire

FRV firefighters responded to a church on fire in South Yarra following a call to Triple Zero (000) just after 6:20 am.

Crews arrived to find a 30 x 60 metre church ablaze on Punt Road and immediately escalated the response.

Approximately 60 firefighters worked to control the fire and were able to stop the flames spreading to the front section of the large L shaped structure. The rear section and roof of the building has sustained extensive damage.

The fire was declared under control at 08:07am with Punt road closed in both directions at the scene of the fire.

Ambulance Victoria have treated a patient at the scene.

Victoria Police are also attending the scene with the cause of the fire currently undetermined.
