More than 30 FRV firefighters responded to a house fire in Clayton South on Monday night.

Multiple callers to Triple Zero (000) reported the fire just before 9.40pm and crews arrived at the Clayton Road scene within five minutes.

Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke and flames issuing from a single storey brick unit, threatening to spread to neighbouring properties.

Wearing breathing apparatus, crews conducted a search of the house. Fortunately, the unit was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Firefighters then worked together to attack the fire, containing it to one unit and bringing it under control shortly before 10:05pm.

Firefighters believe the fire may have started under suspicious circumstances and have handed the scene to Victoria Police to investigate.

Ambulance Victoria paramedics and CFA also assisted FRV at the scene.
