Approximately 30 FRV firefighters responded to an alarm activation at an apartment building in Melbourne’s CBD on Saturday morning.

Crews were alerted to the automatic alarm at the Flinders Lane building just after 7am and arrived on scene within three minutes.

Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters investigated the building and confirmed a fire was issuing from a third-floor residence.

Crews searched the apartment, confirming no occupants were inside before conducting a search for fire extension on the levels above and below.

The fire caused an internal water pipe to burst in the ceiling of the unit, which had extinguished the flames, however this also resulted in extensive flooding on both level three and level two.

Victoria Police assisted with the safe evacuation of occupants and Ambulance Victoria also supported FRV at the scene.

The incident was deemed under control just before 8am, with crews remaining on scene to ensure the site is safe.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
