Firefighters contain Carlton building fire

Approximately 30 firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm panel in Carlton shortly after 1:30pm on Thursday afternoon.

Crews arrived within four minutes at the Swanston Street scene to find fire issuing from a five-storey building. Firefighters immediately escalated the response.

Wearing breathing apparatus, crews entered the building and attacked the flames, bringing the incident under control within 40 minutes, at 2:11pm.

Crews remained on scene for some time to fully extinguish the flames and ventilate the building.

All occupants were safely evacuated.

FRV worked alongside Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria at the scene. The fire is being treated as suspicious and Victoria Police will investigate.

At the height of the incident there were seven FRV appliances on scene, including one aerial appliance and one rescue unit.
