Triple 000 call received three calls for a cafe on fire on Mt Alexander Road in Essendon at 2.51AM.

The first FRV crew arrived on scene within five minutes and escalated the response, as a 20 metre by 10 metre fire engulfed the single storey café, sending smoke across the Essendon junction.

FRV crews donned breathing apparatus and attacked the fire internally, containing it to a small section of the cafe.

The fire was deemed under control by 3.30AM, as crews checked for fire extension into an adjoining carwash facility.

It is not yet known what has started the fire, but investigations by FRV specialist investigators and Victoria Police are underway.

Victoria Police closed Mt Alexander Road in the citybound direction.

Power and gas companies were on scene assisting FRV with service isolations.

Ambulance Victoria was also on scene assessing firefighters' health.
