Nine FRV firefighters responded to a fire at a high voltage communications tower in Kew East in the early hours of Thursday morning.

A caller to Triple Zero (000) reported the fire shortly before 2.40am and crews arrived at the Burke Road scene within six minutes.

Upon arrival, crews found a metal power gantry supporting high voltage power lines was well alight, with the fire reaching the entire height of the gantry.

The fire was in communications cables for mobile phones.

Crews immediately sought the assistance of Victoria Police, who closed Burke Road due to safety risks posed by burning debris falling across the road.

Power from a separate back-up supply had to be isolated before firefighters could attack the fire.

Firefighters brought the fire under control by 3.50am.

Thankfully, nobody was injured as a result of the fire.

An advice noticed was issued due to smoke in the area as a result of the fire.

Several power companies also attended the scene.
