Firefighters contain hazmat incident in Newport

Firefighters responded to a hazmat incident in Newport following a call to Triple Zero (000) just after 10:30 am.

FRV crews arrived to the High Street scene within four minutes to find a vapour build up in a tank which had resulted in a small leak.

Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters isolated the tank and evacuated approximately 50 occupants with one patient being treated by Ambulance Victoria at the scene.

Crews remained on scene to carry out an assessment of the leak before the tank was closed up

 Firefighters carried out atmospheric monitoring in the facility and worked alongside FRV specialist Hazardous Material Firefighters, an FRV Scientific Officer, and Viva Management.

The incident was declared under control at 11:58 pm.

Victoria Police also attended the scene.
