At 10.29am, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), supported by CFA, responded to an incident at Farr Parkway, Keilor North, after a caller to Triple Zero (000) reported seeing a column of smoke.
Firefighters arrived on scene within six minutes to find a slow-moving grass and scrub fire, with several seats of fire in the steep, inaccessible river gorge of Jacksons Creek.
The alarm was quickly escalated due to the nature and location of the fire, which grew to approximately 1km by 300m.
The nearby Keilor Public Golf Course were also evacuated by Victoria Police.
Crews on the ground attacked the blaze with a strong, coordinated response.
An aircraft overhead was used to knock down the fire along the creek, slowing its progress.
The incident was deemed under control at approximately 3.20pm.
Firefighters remained on scene to ensure the safety of the area and black out remaining smouldering materials.
Crews have since extinguished and overhauled the fire.
The cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious, and the incident has been referred to Victoria Police.
Ambulance Victoria was also in attendance.
The airport has also been notified.
