At 3.43am, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) crews responded to several calls of a unit fire on Williamstown Road, Yarraville.
Crews arrived on scene within four minutes to find the top floor of a two-storey unit fully involved in fire, so the response was escalated.
FRV crews donned breathing apparatus and began attacking the fire as well as preventing any further fire spread to adjoining units.
Neighbours reported that no occupants were home, however a thorough search will be conducted when safe.
Williamstown Road has been shut in both directions to enable all fire operations to be conducted safely including the use of aerial appliances.
The fire was deemed under control by 4.02am.
The cause of the fire is not yet known but it will be investigated by FRV specialists.
Firefighters will remain on scene to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
