Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) crews responded to an incident in Bethany Road, Hoppers Crossing at 4.25pm after multiple calls to Triple Zero (000) reporting a building fire.
Crews, assisted by CFA, arrived within five minutes to find flames issuing from a single storey brick home.
Firefighters called for extra resources enroute due to the amount of smoke sighted from the blaze.
Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, conducted an internal attack on the fire and were successful in preventing the fire spreading to a neighbouring home that was under threat.
No one was home at the time of the fire.
The fire was deemed Under Control at 4:52pm.
The blaze resulted in extensive damage to approximately half of the house and garage, and some minor damage to a neighbouring home.
At total of seven appliances and 25 firefighters were committed to the firefight.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined but will be investigated.
A Community Advice message was issued for large amounts of smoke in the area.
