Approximately 13 firefighters responded to a Hazmat incident in Port Melbourne on Thursday afternoon.

A caller to Triple Zero (000) reported a gas main on Princes Street had been ruptured just after 4:30pm.

FRV firefighters arrived on scene in four minutes and using specialist Hazmat equipment, set up atmospheric monitors to record gas concentration.

Crews set up ground monitors to disperse the gas and evacuated six homes as a precaution, until the gas main was repaired.

FRV crews worked alongside Victoria Police at the scene, who managed traffic.
