Approximately 30 firefighters responded to a house fire in Maidstone on Monday evening.

Callers to Triple Zero (000) reported smoke and flames coming from the roof of the house on Ballarat Road just after 7pm.

FRV crews arrived on scene in five minutes to find the house well alight, and quickly escalated the response.

Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters worked to access the fire and knock it down, preventing it spreading to adjoining properties.

Nobody was inside the house at the time of the fire, and firefighters brought it under control within 18 minutes.

They believed the cause to be suspicious, and handed the scene over to police for investigation.

FRV crews remained on scene to monitor hotspots and ensure it was safe.
