Fire Recue Victoria (FRV) responded to a house fire in Brighton East on Friday evening.

Crews arrived within four minutes of receiving the call at 9.09pm to find smoke issuing from the roof of a double storey brick home.

The residents, who were not home at the time, reported the fire after being alerted to an alarm operating via a home security system.

FRV crews donned breathing apparatus and with hose lines entered the burning house to attack the fire, which by now was well alight on the first floor.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the first floor of the home, declaring it under control at 09:43pm, 30 minutes after arriving on scene.

The first floor of the house has sustained significant damage in the fire.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined but will be investigated by the FRV Fire Investigation Unit.
