At 5.14PM, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) was called to a house fire on Dundas Street, Thornbury.
Firefighters arrived to find a two-storey residence alight.
FRV crews worked to extinguish the fire, which threatened a property next door, and brought it under control within 20 minutes.
Victoria Police also attended the scene.
