Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to a house fire at Berkshire Rd this afternoon.

Crews arrived at 1.29pm, four minutes after they were called, and discovered heavy smoke issuing from a single storey weatherboard house.

Firefighters donned breathing apparatus and entered the burning home where they located a resident at the rear of the property.

The male stated that he had fallen asleep and believed there were other occupants still in the house.

Firefighters immediately conducted a secondary search and confirmed no one else was inside.

In total, 28 firefighters attended the incident and were supported by five pumpers, an aerial unit and a rescue unit.

The fire was declared under control at 01:56pm, 27 minutes after crews arrived.

The rear half of the home suffered extensive damage.

The unaccounted-for residents were located at a nearby shopping centre a short time later.

The man was transported to hospital by Ambulance Victoria after suffering smoke inhalation.
