Students at Carrum Primary School got a little more science than they bargained for, when a broken thermometer prompted a response from FRV’s Hazmat unit on Wednesday (11 November).
Firefighters responded to the school just after 2pm, following reports a broken thermometer was leaking mercury in a classroom.
FRV crews from Hallam (FS88) and Patterson River (FS90) Fire Stations arrived quickly and isolated students and staff from the spill area.
FRV's Scientific Officer was consulted, and a specialist Hazmat unit worked to contain the spill and make the area safe.
Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria supported FRV crews at the scene.
