At 4.10am, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to a hazmat incident on Dohertys Road, Truganina, after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported a significant ammonia leak in a food manufacturing facility.
Firefighters arrived on scene to find a large, ongoing ammonia leak contained to a 50m by 50m plant room.
Crews worked together to evacuate 200 people from the site. Thankfully, no individuals required medical attention.
FRV Hazmat operators donned encapsulated suits and entered the impacted room, where they were able to successfully isolate the required valves needed to stop the ammonia leak.
Firefighters were then able to ventilate the room to make the scene safe.
The incident was deemed under control at 7.08am.
Ambulance Victoria were in attendance to monitor the health of firefighters.
Victoria Police were in attendance for traffic control, closing off parts of Dohertys Road and Foundation Road.
WorkSafe and EPA were also contacted.
A community advice warning was issued for the area.
