FRV fights significant grass fire at South Morang

Update - 9.30am 27.01.2026: This fire has been deemed suspicious and will be investigated by Victoria Police.

Forest Fire Management Victoria was on scene last night to fell dangerous trees impacted by the fire.

Around 10 hectares of land was burnt.

Update - 8.15pm: Firefighters worked quickly to stop the forward spread of the fire with their trucks.

Air operations were used to attack the fire in difficult to access bush areas.

The firefighting effort involved seven FRV appliances, 15 CFA appliances and two water-bombing helicopters.

The fire was contained and deemed Under Control at 8.14pm.

Assistance has been requested from Forest Fire Management Victoria due to some trees being rendered hazardous by the impact of the fire.

Victoria Police is investigating after air operations had to be temporarily halted due to the use of privately operated drones over the fire ground.

Update - 6.40PM 27.01.2026:

At 6.04pm, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) supported by CFA responded to an incident near the intersection of Topaz Grove and Girvan Place at South Morang after a caller to Triple Zero (000) reported a column of smoke.

The response was escalated after multiple calls reported flames and bushland on fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a grass and scrub fire in partial bushland around one hectare in size.

The incident is not yet deemed Under Control and firefighters remain on scene.
