FRV responds to a significant unit fire in Maidstone

At 5.24am, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to an incident on Alma Street, Maidstone, after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported a unit fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene in under six minutes to find the rear unit on a two-unit property well alight.

Firefighters quickly established firefighting lines to attack the blaze and prevent it from spreading to an adjoining property.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the 15m x 15m brick veneer single storey unit to conduct a primary search, confirming the single occupant had evacuated. The resident from the adjoining unit had also evacuated.

One resident was treated on scene by Ambulance Victoria and transported to hospital.

The fire was deemed under control at 6.07am.

Firefighting activities will continue over the next few hours to ensure the safety of the area.

The cause of the fire has been deemed suspicious. Victoria Police will lead the investigation.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria were also on scene assisting FRV operations.

The Department of Families, Fairness and Housing attended to arrange alternate accommodation for the displaced residents.

The Maribyrnong City Building Surveyor will attend later today to assess the structural damage.
