Approximately 34 firefighters, including specialist Hazmat crews, responded to a chemical leak in Laverton North on Sunday morning.

FRV crews were called to the Leslie Road scene at about 11.20am after a chemical, believed to be ammonia, was reported to be leaking at a commercial premise.

Crews arrived on scene within seven minutes and wearing chemical resistant coveralls, set up an exclusion zone and began investigating the source.

FRV’s specialist Hazmat unit and an FRV Scientific Advisor responded to the incident, and identified the leak to be issuing from external refrigeration piping. The leak was isolated by a Refrigeration Technician.

The odour dissipated and the scene was declared under control at approximately 1.45pm.

FRV crews remained on scene for some time to ensure it was safe.

Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police worked alongside FRV crews on scene. Thankfully, nobody was injured.
