Approximately 25 firefighters responded to a chemical leak at a home in Malvern East on Monday evening.

FRV crews were called to the Nirvana Avenue incident just before 8:30pm after a caller to Triple Zero (000) reported they had mixed two pool chemicals together.

The chemicals mixed together then created a gas cloud.

Firefighters including specialist Hazmat crews arrived in seven minutes and worked to neutralise the chemicals, and make the area safe.

Wearing chemical splash suits and breathing apparatus, crews worked to disperse the gas cloud and dilute the chemicals, then tipped the safe chemicals into the pool as initially intended.

They advised surrounding neighbours to remain indoors with windows and doors closed.

One person was transferred into the care of Ambulance Victoria paramedics
