An off-duty police officer was one of many callers that raised the alarm reporting flames issuing from the property on Pascoe Vale Rd.
FRV firefighters were on scene within four minutes and found the single storey home well involved in the fire.
Donned in breathing apparatus, crews made their way into the property and were able to contain the fire to the front to the house.
The fire was declared under control after 45 minutes. Crews are expected to remain on scene for some time maintaining fire duties including extinguishing hot spots.
Firefighters determined the fire was suspicious and will hand the scene over to Victoria Police for investigation once the area has been made safe.
