Kitchen fire in multi-storey city building under control quickly

FRV firefighters were on scene within two minutes of a fire indicator panel alarm activating at a multi-storey building in the city this evening.

Approximately 20 firefighters responded to Collins Street at 6:30pm on Saturday evening, and quickly made their way to the 19th floor of the residential tower.

A fire that broke out in a kitchen was held at bay by the building’s sprinkler system and firefighters worked to ensure it was completely extinguished.

The fire was declared under control within ten minutes and was able to be contained to the kitchen of a single apartment.

The fire is not believed to be suspicious.

FRV crews and Victoria Police evacuated approximately 100 residences during the incident, and most residents were able to safety return to their homes within an hour.

At the height of the incident there were four pumpers, a rescue unit, and a Command unit on scene.
