More than 28 fire fighters responded to a house on fire in Bundoora on Thursday morning, which specialist fire investigators have confirmed was caused by a lightning strike.

FRV crews were called to the incident on Betula Avenue just after 8:05am after multiple callers to Triple Zero (000) reported the blaze.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a significant fire issuing from the roof of a single storey brick residence, and threatening to spread to an adjoining property.

Wearing breathing apparatus, crews conducted an internal attack and worked to contain the blaze, bringing it under control at about 9:15am.

Three patients who had self-evacuated were treated on scene by Ambulance Victoria paramedics and transported to hospital.

FRV crews will remain on scene for some time to ensure the fire has been completely extinguished and the area is safe.

CFA and Victoria Police also assisted FRV at the scene.
