Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) crews responded to a residential unit on fire at Ronald Street, Moorabbin shortly after 11am this morning after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported hearing an explosion.
Firefighters arrived within four minutes to find the single storey brick home 15 metres by 10 metres fully involved at the rear of the property fully ablaze.
An elderly lady resident was home at the time of the fire and was assisted to safety by a neighbour.
FRV crews in breathing apparatus searched the premises and confirmed no other persons inside the burning structure.
Firefighters with hoselines attacked the fire to quell the flames whilst also protecting a neighbouring unit that was under threat from the fire.
The fire was declared under control at 12:07pm, 54 minutes after FRV arrived on scene.
The unit has been destroyed in the fire.
The fire started from a discarded cigarette butt.
FRV crews will be on scene for several hours fully extinguishing the fire.
