Residents evacuate after fire in Maribyrnong apartment carpark

Firefighters were called to an apartment building on Wests Road in Maribyrnong at around 5:20am on Friday morning, after a car caught alight in a ground floor car park.

FRV crews arrived to the incident within six minutes, and found the fire had spread to two other cars.

Wearing breathing apparatus for protection from the smoke, firefighters entered the car park.

They worked quickly to knock the fire down, and protect other cars in the vicinity.

Crews brought the fire under control within 15 minutes.

Approximately 30 residents were evacuated to a safe area, while crews worked to completely extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters remained on scene until around 8am this morning working to identify any remaining hot spots.

The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated however firefighters believe it may have started under suspicious circumstances.

The scene will be handed to Victoria Police.

In total there were four FRV firefighting appliances at the scene including a rescue unit, and around 15 firefighters.
