More than 30 FRV firefighters responded to a fire at a Murumbeena apartment complex on Tuesday night.

An automatic fire alarm sounded just before 6.55pm and crews arrived at the Dunoon Street scene within seven minutes.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke was issuing from the basement car park and escalated the response.

The building's residents, more than 20 people, had evacuated safely.

FRV crews donned breathing apparatus and entered the basement carpark to attack the fire.

Firefighters encountered a small explosion and thick smoke in the carpark, which made accessing the fire difficult.

Crews remain on scene to fully extinguish the fire, extra the smoke from the car park and investigate the cause of the fire.

Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police were on scene assisting FRV.

Gas and power companies also attended.
