Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) responded to a structure fire at 03.04am on McPherson Street, Reservoir after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported a building fire.
Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes to find the rear of the house engulfed in flames.
A working smoke alarm and a neighbour who banged on the windows alerted the family of six (four children and two adults) which enabled them to evacuate safely.
The neighbour was treated by Ambulance Victoria for smoke inhalation at the scene.
The fire was deemed Under Control within 30 minutes, however, firefighters remained at the scene for an extended period to extinguish hot spots and monitor the incident.
A total of 11 appliances and 30 firefighters responded to the incident.
There was significant fire damage to the rear of the home as well as smoke and water damage to other parts of the structure.
The local Building Surveyor will attend to assess the structural integrity of the house.
The Fire Investigation Unit will also attend the scene today to investigate the cause of the fire, which is currently undetermined.
