Approximately 20 firefighters were called to the scene and found the rear side of a brick unit well alight, with smoke issuing from property.

Fortunately, working smoke alarms alerted the four residents to the fire and all had safely evacuated from the unit.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus worked quickly to extinguish the fire, which was declared under control within eight minutes of firefighters arrival at the scene.

At the height of the incident there were six firefighting appliances at the scene, along with one command unit.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a discarded cigarette.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria units also assisted FRV crews on scene.
