Approximately 20 firefighters responded to a gas leak in Box Hill on Tuesday evening.

FRV crews were called to the Margaret Street incident just before 6:15pm after a caller to Triple Zero (000) reported a car had crashed into a building.

Specialist firefighters including Hazmat crews arrived on scene to find the car had sheared off a gas meter, which caused the gas to leak.

Wearing breathing apparatus, specialist search and rescue and Hazmat crews worked to monitor gas levels and make the scene safe.

Occupants in nearby areas were evacuated to safe area as a precaution.

Firefighters were able to contain the leak approximately one hour after first arriving on scene.

They worked alongside Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, SES and the local gas company at the scene.
