Suspicious Cheltenham fire extinguished

More than 20 firefighters responded to Cheltenham this morning, following multiple Triple Zero (000) calls reporting smoke and flames issuing from house just after 2:30am.

Initial FRV crews arrived at the Moonda Grove home within six minutes and found flames issuing from the roof.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus started an aggressive external attack on the fire, knocking down the fire quickly.

The blaze was deemed under control less that 30 minutes after firefighters arrived on scene.

Fortunately, two residents were able to safely evacuate the property and there were no injuries reported at the scene.

The exact cause of the fire is not yet known. The blaze is believed to have started with a car and then spread to the house.

The fire has been deemed suspicious and the scene has been handed to Victoria Police for investigation.

At the height of the incident there were seven firefighting appliances on scene, and three other units.

Ambulance Victoria crews also assisted at the scene.
