Take Your Next Step and Become a Firefighter

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) has today launched its 2026 recruitment campaign, Your Next Step, calling on community‑minded Victorians to apply to become firefighters.

Fire Rescue Commissioner Gavin Freeman AFSM said this year’s campaign theme highlights the diverse pathways into firefighting, with many joining as a second or even third career.

“Our firefighters come from all walks of life, often bringing skills and attributes from previous careers, community work and life experiences such as raising a family,” Commissioner Freeman said.

“There’s no single pathway, and many people are often surprised by how many skills from other areas of life support a career in firefighting.”

Over the coming months, ‘Your next step’ will reach thousands of Victorians across radio, social and online media.

‘Your next step’ showcases the voices and real experiences of firefighters, including women, regional Victorians, First Nations people, and those who may not have typically seen themselves in the role.

Commissioner Freeman said the campaign aims to broaden the public’s perception of the role.

“Firefighters do so much more than fight fires. Our people also respond to medical emergencies, educate the public on fire safety, take part in a range of community outreach programs, and work closely with partners across the emergency management sector.

“Becoming a firefighter opens the door to a career with endless opportunities to grow and develop new skills.”

FRV firefighters are provided with world-class training and support throughout their careers, with clear pathways for progression and opportunities for role specialisation.

Specialisation for example includes Emergency Medical Response, Urban Search and Rescue, High Angle Rescue, Heavy Rescue, Road Crash Rescue and Marine Response.

Successful recruits will have strong problem-solving skills, work well in a team and demonstrate integrity, accountability and all-round strength and fitness.
