University evacuated after chemical leak

All university buildings along La Trobe Street - between Swanston and Russell Street - were evacuated on Monday afternoon due to a chemical leak.

The incident was reported at 3.55pm, with reports of two chemicals leaking at one of the university buildings.

There was also a heated furnace in the room.

Eleven FRV crews, including specialist HAZMAT units and scientific advisors, responded.

Crews evacuated all buildings.

Crews isolated the chemical storage cylinders and used atmospheric monitoring to ensure the building was safe to enter. 

Firefighters then worked on scene for seven hours to isolate the leak and make the scene safe. 

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria crews also attended.
